Sophie, the Manufacture de Sèvres is literally located at the gates of Paris but, if the reputation of Sèvres porcelain is well known, few people really know its history. Can you tell us a few words about it?
The Sèvres Porcelain Factory, whose first workshops were originally located in Vincennes from 1740 to 1756, has been one of the top venues of artistic creation since its creation.
Thanks to the protection of Louis XV, who became its sole owner in 1759, and under the influence of his favorite Madame de Pompadour, the Royal Manufactory quickly gained prestige beyond its borders: its services with inimitable colors and decorations, its vases, and its cookies adorned the tables of the courts of Europe.
200 years after its creation, the National Ceramics Museum preserves a reference collection of nearly 50,000 works, combining masterpieces from all eras and all countries with contemporary works and creations of the Manufacture.
Since 1876, the Manufacture and the Museum of Ceramics have been located on their current site, a magnificent example of 19th century industrial architecture.
This complex of buildings, classified as Historic Monuments, includes in particular the manufacturing and decoration workshops, linked by majestic glass windows and galleries, and surrounded by the wood-fired kilns more than 10 meters high.
These exceptional spaces lend themselves to the organization of prestigious events.
We will present the exhibition "A Table le repas, tout un art" very soon. It retraces the history of the French gastronomic meal from antiquity to the present day. It is the occasion to celebrate the 10 years of the classification of the French gastronomic meal by the Unesco and the 280 years of the Manufacture.
