Book the Municipal Theater of Nevers, an amazing Italian-style theater

Built in 1809, then refurbished in 1899, this monument, known as the "little theater", has an architecture and a scenography known as Italian. Since 2018, the building is once again open to the public on show nights and offers an eclectic program between theater, dance, circus and music.

Listed in the Inventory of Historical Monuments since 1993

In neo-classical style, the facade rises on two levels separated by a terrace covering a peristyle that protects the entrance from bad weather. The colonnade capitals of the peristyle are particularly interesting. Composite, they mix the acanthus leaves of the Corinthian order and the volutes of the Ionic order as well as figures and masks referring to the different theatrical genres such as ancient and classical tragedy, comedy...

On the first floor, the terrace communicates with the foyer through five semicircular bays. At the top, a cornice with modillions supports three pediments. Those at the ends, arched and broken, are enhanced by a medallion decorated with musical instruments. All have a cartouche with an inscription: music, theater and poetry.

A magical place for your events

Its neo-classical style, its architecture and its Italian-style hall make this 19th century monument a magical place with a 350-seat auditorium in front of a 40m2 stage. On the first floor, a beautiful terrace of 25m2 enlarges the foyer which can welcome 50 people for a cocktail.

The theater's setting combines prestige and innovation, heritage and modernity. An Italian-style theater dating from the early 19th century, the venue has been completely renovated and is equipped with the most modern broadcasting and recording equipment (streaming, 4K video projection, 4K camera recording).

Very nice theater, I take away one star for the lack of space in the parking lot. We went to see a children's show and what a hassle it was to find a place in Nevers, close to the theater. I had to park in a blue space or risk receiving a fine.

Very beautiful place. On the other hand, it's impossible to see the entire scene when you're sitting in the side balconies 🤔

Very pretty place Small, cozy performance hall Just be careful if you take seats upstairs, you don't necessarily see the scene well if you are placed on the balconies on the side. You have to get up from your seat to see it completely

The theater was built by the municipality in the period from 1809 to 1823 according to the drawings of the circuit engineer Lebrun. Work began on 25 November 1809. This Italianate-style room has a façade of decorative stone from the surroundings of Nevers, rubble walls, a brick room fence, an oak frame, a slate roof and large iron locks. In front of the building, the square was expanded and paved. Bollards border the park. Work stopped on July 1, 1815 with the arrival of the Allied forces and was not resumed until 1822 before ending in 1823. January 6, 1824 The new city theater is opened with the play "Barberousse and Blackbeard". Improvement works were also carried out between 1833 and 1836. However, the complete restoration of the room only dates from 1844 to 1854. December 20, 1898Emile Vernon, painter in Tours, painted, signed and dated the ceiling of the room in 1899. In 1899, the theater was completely redeveloped by the architect Brazeau in order to meet the new security provisions decided in the wake of the fatal fire at the Paris Comic Opera (May 1887). The side emergency stairs were built on this date. Endally, a terraced amphitheater adds to the monumental entrance. (Source: "Pedestrian Path in Nevers"). Damaged by the bombing of July 16, 1944, the theater was closed in 1971 for security reasons. It was reopened in 1980 after major renovation works.
