The refuge of the king's sister

Designed between 1772 and 1782 by Alexandre de La Brière, the king's architect, the park of Madame Elisabeth's estate was one of the most beautiful English gardens of its time.

In 1783, King Louis XVI bought a property belonging to the Prince of Guéméné, who was in the grip of a resounding bankruptcy, to offer it to his sister, Madame Elisabeth. This "country house" was located in the village of Montreuil, then independent from Versailles. The princess had just turned 19.

During the six years before she came of age - then 25 - she was only allowed to stay there during the day. Surrounded by a small court of friends, Madame Elisabeth spent happy days here, between prayer, reading, embroidery, gardening and horseback riding. An important part of her time was spent in helping the poor of the neighborhood.

On October 6, 1789, under the pressure of the crowd, the royal family was brought back to Paris. Refusing to emigrate, Madame Elisabeth shared the fate of her royal family until the end; she died on the scaffold on May 10th 1794.

A domain to charm your guests

Remarkable in more ways than one, the Domaine de Madame Elisabeth covers more than 7 hectares. The park bears witness to the beauty of princely gardens in the Age of Enlightenment. Several elements inherited from the plans of La Brière evoke this period: the Orangery, the avenue of lime trees overlooking the Avenue de Paris, the grotto, the large perspectives framed by groves.

The house, deeply transformed in the XIX century, has kept three salons corresponding to the original heart of the house. The furniture of Madame Elisabeth is for the most part preserved at château in Versailles.

Today the Domaine, purchased in 1983 by the Department of Yvelines, is a public family park open all year round. It is also the ideal place to organize events in complete privacy in a bucolic setting only 30 minutes from the heart of Paris.
