Book the Château of Malmaison in the footsteps of Empress Josephine
An imperial residence
The national museum of château of Malmaison offers the possibility of organizing events in the elegant and refined setting of the residence of Empress Josephine.
On April 21, 1799, Josephine Bonaparte acquired Malmaison for the sum of 325,000 francs. This purchase was confirmed by Bonaparte on his return from Egypt and he thus became the true owner of the estate. They decided to make important works there, indeed this building built around 1610 was enlarged a first time in 1686 then endowed with two wings on the court in 1780 and appears to them out of fashion.
They called upon the young architects Percier and Fontaine, who initially proposed to replace the old house with a neo-classical villa. The two men knew each other well, having spent a long time together in Rome where they had studied ancient monuments. Wishing to avoid reckless spending, the First Consul forced them to restore the existing château .
From 1800 to 1802 this small château became, with the Tuileries, the seat of the French government where the ministers of the Consulate frequently met.
In the fall of 1802, the consul and his family moved to Saint-Cloud and Josephine often returned to the "Imperial Palace of Malmaison" to develop and expand the estate.
Josephine's refuge
After the divorce in 1809 the Emperor gave her this property, Josephine continued to entertain and maintained her lifestyle despite her near solitude. She kept an open table and organized concerts in her gallery, sometimes receiving distinguished guests such as Tsar Alexander I. Napoleon returned to Malmaison only twice after 1809 to meet Josephine and stayed one last time from June 25 to 29, 1815 after his abdication to reflect on his memories. It was at Malmaison that Josephine died on May 29, 1814.
