A home workshop that became a home workshop

It is a place of great poetry. Hidden in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, on the southern slope of the Montmartre hill, the Gustave Moreau Museum is a living and exceptional testimony of the eponymous symbolist painter.

It was Gustave Moreau himself who designed this workshop-home that became a house-workshop. At his request, in 1895, the architect Albert Lafon transformed the family home into a small sentimental museum. The second floor displays the artist's family portraits, as well as works donated by his closest friends such as Edgar Degas.

The second and third floors become large glassed-in workshops, connected by a majestic staircase.

This unique house-studio in Paris contains the works and the collection of one of the greatest painters of the nineteenth century, undisputed master of French Symbolism. The museum holds several hundred paintings and watercolors, and a fabulous cabinet of graphic art.
