Book the Arc de Triomphe for a summit event
An imperial building
In 1806, Napoleon I decreed the erection of an arch to the glory of the Grande Armée on the Place de l'Etoile. The project was entrusted to Jean-Arnaud Raymond and Jean-François Chalgrin.
Plans were hastily drawn up and the foundation stone was laid on 15 August 1806, the Emperor's birthday. Thereafter, Chalgrin alone drew up a new project which, in terms of architecture, was respected by his successors. When Chalgrin died in 1811, the monument was still only 5.40 meters above the ground.
With the return of the Bourbons in 1814, the work was stopped. Work resumed under the reign of Louis XVIII and was completed in 1836, under Louis-Philippe.
Symbol of the glory of the French armies and national unity, the Arc de Triomphe is decorated with four groups sculpted by Rude, Cortot and Etex. The frieze of the entablature unfolds a huge bas-relief narrating the departure and return of the French armies.
For the interior of the monument, the architect Chalgrin had not planned any ornamentation. It was in 1835 that the idea of inscribing the names of the 128 battles of the Republic and the Empire, as well as those of the generals who took part in them, was born under the vault decorated with Roman-style caissons.
