Book the Cernuschi Museum for an escape to Asia in the heart of Paris
An exceptional collection of Asian art, located in a Private Mansion on the edge of the Parc Monceau
Located on the edge of the Parc Monceau, the museum is housed in the former Private Mansion of Henri Cernuschi, who donated his home and his Asian art collections to the City of Paris. It houses a unique collection of Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean art.
The story is first of all that of a fascinating man: Henri Cernuschi. An Italian patriot and hero of the revolution that liberated Milan from the Austrian occupation in 1848, he went into exile in Paris after the fall of the short-lived Roman Republic. It was in France that he built his reputation as an economist and his fortune.
A true cosmopolitan and traumatized by the events of the Commune, Henri Cernuschi decided to travel around the world in 1871. During his peregrinations, he fell in love with Asia and acquired, in China and Japan, more than five thousand works of art that would form the core of his collection. This exceptional collection was exhibited at the Orientalist Exhibition at the Palais de l'Industrie in Paris (August 1873-January 1874) upon his return from his trip.
At the same time, he bought from the Péreire brothers the last undeveloped plot of land on Avenida Velasquez, and entrusted the architect William Bouwens van der Boijen with the construction of a Private Mansion where he would reside, surrounded by works of art brought back from his Asian journey.
A sublime neo-classical building for a refined event
The Cernuschi Museum is housed in a superb neoclassical residence. Designed by the Dutch architect William Bouwens van der Boijen, it is reminiscent of the delicacy of Italian villas of that period. On the facade, exquisite mosaic medallions representing Aristotle and Leonardo da Vinci, welcome the dazzled visitor.
The beautiful volumes and refinement of the private mansions of the Plaine Monceau make this place the ideal setting for prestigious events, particularly in the Great Buddha room. After nine months of work, the Cernuschi Museum unveiled to the public, in March 2020, a new and completely redesigned permanent collection.
