The largest monastic city in Europe

Established on 13 hectares, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is the largest monastic city inherited from the Middle Ages. In the heart of the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it combines heritage, culture, art of living and hospitality.
Founded in 1101 on the borders of Anjou, Touraine and Poitou by the itinerant monk Robert d'Arbrissel, Fontevraud owes its power to the Plantagenets and to its close ties with Eleanor of Aquitaine. Queen of France and then of England, she spent her last years there.
For seven centuries, the abbey welcomed many nobles of royal blood. But the Revolution drove out all the monks and nuns in 1792. Napoleon then transformed Fontevraud into one of the toughest prisons in France, a role it would retain until 1963.
A cultural center since 1975, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud continues the ambition of the Ideal City desired by its founder. Every day, it welcomes visitors, artists in residence and conference participants. Cultural programming, exhibitions and digital innovations invite everyone to live their own Fontevraud experience.

More than an event, create your story!

A magnificent architecture in a natural and soothing setting: the Abbaye de Fontevraud is distinguished by its multiple facilities, its warmly designed hotel, its starred chef, a rich history and a tradition of art and culture that give the place a unique spirit.

Whether one is facing the grandiose chevet of the abbey church or in a vaulted meeting room, the "wow" effect is undeniable. It is all the more appreciable on such a vast site, surrounded by nature and forest, conducive to being "out of the world" to work or share moments of relaxation. Fontevraud has a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces that can be used to organize management seminars, conventions with team-building, workshops, sub-committees, and even plenary sessions for 400 people. On the day of the event, it's a real immersion in a unique historical, cultural and artistic environment to work, relax and meet.

Since 2014, Fontevraud Abbey has had a 4-star hotel with 54 rooms, located within the walls of the monastic city, offering its guests the privilege of wandering freely through the abbey at night: a spellbinding immersive experience, following in the footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine and her son Richard the Lionheart, whose recumbents can be admired in the abbey church.
Beyond the enchanting setting, Fontevraud does not forget the fundamentals of corporate events: customized offers and flawless organization with a dedicated, available and responsive contact for each event, to create a perfect experience, down to the smallest details.

An eco-responsible approach
Chef of Fontevraud le Restaurant, Bocuse d'Or, Thibaut Ruggeri, after earning his first Michelin star in 2017, is also one of the first French chefs to be awarded the Green Star for sustainable gastronomy since 2020. A long-standing commitment with the award of the ISO 26000 CSR label in 2014, sustainable development is indeed more than ever on the agenda.

Fontevraud, the Museum of Modern Art
In addition to the thousand-year-old heritage of Fontevraud, there is now a brand new museum of modern art which allows visitors to admire more than 800 works of art donated by the collectors Martine and Léon Cligman. Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, André Derain, Robert Delaunay, Maurice de Vlaminck, or Germaine Richier, rub shoulders with non-European art.

It is a truly extraordinary place, I have just visited for the 2nd time, the abbey is so perfectly restored, no embellishments hide the stark beauty of this building. The tombs of the Plantagenets are on display and are an amazing piece of history to see. We stayed 2 nights in the hotel, being able to wander around the abbey at night was a fantastic experience. The reception staff and waiting staff in the hotel and restaurant were kind and welcoming. I could have stayed forever. I am so grateful for the constant work that clearly goes in to maintaining these hugely important historic buildings.

Very large abbey and grounds. Plan at least 4 hours for a visit. More is better because of the rich history and stunning architecture to be immersed in.

Just magnificent. Historic site - part church, part art gallery, part museum - truly awesome and got to be worth 2-3 hours of your time to visit. Not ripping off tourists either - so 13 Euro entry is a bargain given how much there is to see and how much a place like this must cost to maintain. Less than 5 Euro for a goats cheese apricot and local honey baguette that was superb and totally fresh. We would have spent longer there but had to leave the dog in the car and even in April the heat was building so be aware it is not doggy friendly, The kitchen roof was something else entirely - never seen that type of structure before - I have a thing for ceilings (not sure where that comes from but we all have our "thang" don't we? But seriously, external and internal it kinda beggars belief - I mean how the heck did they build something so complex back in the days before cherry pickers and scissor lift platforms?

The spectaculair Abbey of Fontevraud is a must visit if you're staying in the Loire region. The building itself is beautiful and well kept. They recently added things like virtual reality animations on your phone that will entertain both young and old. Make sure to take your time for your visit, there's plenty to feast your eyes on.

Don't bother with the negative reviews! Just go. This was built by the most powerful woman of the Middle Ages and she knew her stuff. The building is spectacular with spare lines and the stone used is stunning. The building has been repurposed many times and it's has the feel of living history.
