Château de Rosa Bonheur
A former 15th-century seigneurial estate in the Seine-et-Marne hamlet of By-Thomery, château was acquired by the famous painter Rosa Bonheur in 1859, following the sale of her painting Le Marché aux chevaux. On the upper part of the village, adjacent to the Fontainebleau forest, Rosa settled with her 200 animals. The artist immediately commissioned the architect Jules Saulnier to build her studio. She moved in a year later and spent the last forty years of her life there. In her studio, she received the Legion d'Honneur from the Empress herself, who made it the last act of her regency. Rosa became the first woman artist to be so honored. Between a neo-Gothic studio frozen in time and a park with centuries-old trees, the setting is authentic, romantic and moving. The hundreds of rosebushes, the vines climbing the walls, the dovecote overlooking the house, the muses' pavilion at the end of an alley all combine to give the estate a charming, delightfully old-fashioned look.
Rosa Bonheur's château is the ideal venue for prestigious receptions, intimate dinners or business seminars. The orangery, stables and glass roof have been preserved and refurbished to offer a beautiful enfilade of over 160 m2 opening onto a vast lawn, beds of old roses and the wooded park. An ideal setting for authenticity, elegance and pleasure...
